Why You’ll Love This

Buffalo chicken dip is a classic recipe that always seems to be a crowd favorite at any party it seems. For good reason too! It’s the perfect way to enjoy the great flavor of buffalo wings in a creamy and delicious dip.

As a registered dietitian, I’m always considering what healthy swaps I can make to my favorite traditional dishes to make them more filling, satisfying, and healthier. I don’t believe you need to sacrifice health for flavor, the two can absolutely exist together.

By swapping out traditional cream cheese for blended cottage cheese, this recipe keeps the rich, creamy texture you love while adding a good source of protein. I also made sure to use enough chicken to make it really hearty and nutrient-dense. This high-protein buffalo chicken dip gives you a whopping 20 grams of protein per serving. Protein is essential for keeping your blood sugar levels stable and keeping you feeling full. The cottage cheese, along with Monterey jack and cheddar cheeses, provide a good source of calcium and vitamin D for strong bones, heart health, and hormone health too.

Don’t assume you’re sacrificing flavor though here. With the cheese, green onion, ranch seasoning, and buffalo sauce, you’re still getting that delicious flavor you’re expecting to get. Honestly, whenever I bring this dip anywhere, people are always shocked to find out that it’s a healthy buffalo chicken dip recipe.

Whether you’re dipping in fresh vegetables, pita chips, whole grain crackers, or your favorite chips, this creamy dip is a crowd pleaser that everyone will love—perfect for game days, gatherings, or even meal prep!

Ingredients You’ll Need

This cottage cheese buffalo chicken dip recipe uses simple ingredients you can find at virtually any grocery store. Here’s what you’ll need.

ingredients needed to make a cottage cheese buffalo chicken dip recipe.
  • Shredded chicken: You’ll need cooked chicken for this recipe. I usually use pre-shredded rotisserie chicken but this recipe is also a great way to use up any leftover chicken you may have. Canned chicken is another easy way to add chicken into this recipe too.

  • Cottage cheese: Rich in protein, calcium, and probiotics. I usually use a 2% cottage cheese but you can opt for a fat free cottage cheese option too to decrease the fat content while keeping the protein high.

  • Buffalo sauce: a classic buffalo chicken dip would obviously not be complete without buffalo sauce! I use Frank’s Buffalo Wing Sauce. Be sure to use a buffalo sauce rather than a hot sauce.

  • Shredded cheese: To get that cheesy flavor, you’ll need cheese. I love the combo of using both sharp cheddar cheese and monterey jack cheese. Use a cheese grater to grate your own cheese or buy pre-shredded cheese. Note: because of anti-caking agents, pre-shredded cheese doesn’t always melt as evenly or easily as cheese you grate yourself.

  • Green onion: sliced green onions add a bit of color, texture and some antioxidants to this buffalo chicken dip.

  • Ranch seasoning: this adds a tangy and herby flavor to balance out the spicy buffalo sauce. I always have a big container of the classic Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning on hand.

  • Garlic powder

  • Onion powder

How To Make Cottage Cheese Buffalo Chicken Dip

One of my favorite things about this cottage cheese buffalo chicken dip is that it’s incredibly easy to make! Here’s how you’ll make it.

Step One: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step Two: Blend the cottage cheese, buffalo sauce, ranch seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder together until you get a smooth consistency. You can use an immersion blender, high speed blender, or put all the ingredients into a food processor.

Step Three: Transfer the cottage cheese mixture to a small baking dish or pie dish. Stir in the shredded chicken, shredded cheddar cheese, shredded monterey jack cheese, and green onions.

Step Four: Place the dip into the preheated oven. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes until hot + bubbly. Optionally, you can broil for 2-3 minutes at the end to get a perfectly golden and crispy top.

Step Five: Top with extra cheese and green onions.

Serve this cottage cheese buffalo chicken dip with tortilla chips, pita chips, or fresh veggies like celery sticks, carrot sticks, or sliced red bell peppers.

How To Store

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. When you’re ready to eat, reheat leftovers in the microwave or in the oven until warmed through. You could eat leftovers cold also if you prefer!

Variations, Substitutions, + Dietitian’s Tips

  • To decrease the sodium content, swap ½ the cottage cheese out for Greek yogurt.
  • Increase the heat by adding diced jalapeños or a dash of cayenne pepper for a spicier kick.
  • Mix in blue cheese crumbles for a more traditional buffalo wing-inspired dip.
  • Use fat free or low fat cheese (shredded cheese and/or cottage cheese) to reduce fat while keeping the protein content high.
  • Make it a Buffalo Chicken Wrap: Use the dip as a filling for a high-protein wrap or stuff it into a lettuce cup for a low-carb option.
  • Spoon the dip over roasted sweet potatoes for a fun loaded sweet potatoes meal idea.
