This Detox Island Green Smoothie recipe is a copycat recipe of the fan favorite smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Café. It uses nutrient-dense ingredients like tropical fruits, dark leafy greens, coconut water, and ginger to give you a sweet, delicious smoothie that has loads of health benefits.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Smoothies are such an easy way to add a lot of nutritious ingredients into your day in a way that will make your taste buds do a happy dance.

If you’re not a big fan of green vegetables, this is honestly a great way to incorporate them. The sweetness from the fruits completely covers up the taste of the leafy greens that you won’t even notice they’re there (well, except for the vibrant green color).

This Detox Island Green Tropical Smoothie recipe is also so quick to make, especially if you use frozen fruit and pre-minced ginger, which require zero chopping. Plus, this homemade version is a lot more cost effective to make at home rather than visiting Tropical Smoothie Cafe each time you’re craving it.

In addition to being delicious and easy to make, this nutrient-packed beverage is great for your health too. It packs in a good amount of dietary fiber and antioxidants, such as copper and vitamin C, which are great for reducing inflammation and keeping your immune system strong.

Ingredients To Make a Detox Island Green Smoothie

This green detox smoothie recipe uses simple ingredients that you can easily find in your local grocery store. Here’s what you’ll need.

ingredients need to make a detox green island tropical smoothie.
  • Coconut water – using coconut water as the main liquid of this smoothie gives it a more tropical flavor. Coconut water is also a great source of electrolytes like potassium. You could easily substitute another liquid though such as coconut milk or orange juice to still have that tropical flavor.

  • Frozen pineapple – I love using frozen fruit in smoothies because it replaces the need to add ice to your smoothie. Fresh pineapple or even pineapple juice could be used in place of the frozen pineapple – if you substitute though, you may need to add some ice to get the desired consistency you want.

  • Frozen mango – Adding mango, in addition to the pineapple, provides a lot of vitamin C which functions as an antioxidant and plays a big role in keeping your immune system strong.

  • Banana – I’d recommend using ripe bananas. A banana with some brown spots on it is sweeter than a green banana and adds natural sweetness.

  • Kale – this dark leafy green vegetable is a great way to get ample amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K – all of which are essential for good health.

  • Spinach – I prefer to use fresh spinach, particularly baby spinach, but you could also use frozen spinach. Along with the kale, the spinach provides this smoothie with its’ beautiful green color.

  • Ginger – I opt to use pre-minced ginger like this one, which can easily be found in most grocery stores. You can also use fresh ginger if you prefer to.

How To Make a Detox Island Green Smoothie

I love the simplicity of smoothies and this tropical detox smoothie is no different!

All you’re going to do is add all of your ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend on high for approximately 30 seconds until smooth.

Then pour into a tall glass and enjoy!

This smoothie is best served immediately but you can store it in the fridge for up to 2 days. Just give it a quick shake or stir before serving.

Detox Island Green Smoothie Recipe Tips & Substitutions

  • To include this as part of a balanced meal, add some protein and healthy fats such as these make-ahead egg bites or cottage cheese with peaches
  • To make this smoothie a balanced meal all in one, add some healthy fats such as avocado, chia seeds, flaxseeds, or nut butter and a protein source such as Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, protein powder, or unflavored collagen peptides
  • No kale? Use double the amount of baby spinach.
  • Substitute coconut water for coconut milk, water, almond milk, or another plant-based milk.
  • Use fresh ripe fruits instead of frozen fruit. If you use fresh fruit, you may need to add a few ice cubes to get the desired consistency and temperature of a smoothie.

FAQs

What’s in a Detox Island Green from Tropical Smoothie?

The Detox Island Green smoothie from Tropical Smoothie is a blended mix of mango, pineapple, banana, kale, spinach, coconut water, and ginger.

Is the Detox Island Green smoothie from Tropical Smoothie good for you?

Yes. This Detox Island Green smoothie is a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber which are great for overall health. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with reducing inflammation.

Does the Detox Island Green smoothie detox your body?

Yes and no. Your body is perfectly capable of detoxifying itself thanks to your liver and kidneys. Detox drinks are largely a marketing ploy. There is not a singular food or drink that can automatically detoxify your body.

Including healthy ingredients and certain foods, in addition to a healthy lifestyle, can help to support your liver and kidneys though, allowing them to function at their highest potential. One example is cruciferous veggies (like the kale added to this smoothie!). Cruciferous vegetables can help to support your body’s natural detoxification pathways, especially for estrogen detoxification.

Does this smoothie have added sugar?

No, unlike many other smoothie recipes that use ingredients like honey or maple syrup to add sweetness, this smoothie uses natural ingredients and has no added sugar. The sweetness comes from the tropical fruits used in the recipe.

Can I make this in advance?

Yes, freeze all ingredients except for coconut water together in a container or in ice cube trays. On the day you’re going to prepare it, just add the frozen ingredients into a blender and add coconut water prior to blending.
